Hey Listeners. Happy New Year! Well almost. It’s December 28th as I record this so we have just a few more days.  I hope you’re year was sprinkled with successes, awesome memories and a lot of fun. Or if you find yourself just thankful that this year is over and hoping for a better 2022, just know that you made it.

We all know that the New Year is usually the time to reflect, refocus and reenergize to reach those goals you have set for yourself. It can be really easy to laser in on your budget and your finances for the holiday season with that extra spending going on but don’t let your finances fall to the wayside in the New Year. Add budgeting and financial goals to the list of other goals and resolutions you have set for yourself. You will thank yourself later! Now this doesn’t have to be your main resolution but keeping up on your budget and your finances can help all of your other goals fall into place.

For example, do you have plans for a summer vacation with your partner or family this year that you couldn’t quite make happen the last year or two? Work it into your budget now and start saving. Take advantage of automatic transfers and club accounts so you can stay motivated to make it happen this year.

Maybe one of your resolutions is eat healthier. I know that should definitely be one of mine. Start by being aware of how much your grocery bill is each month and this might require you to start tracking your spending on food early in the year so you can make some adjustments. Find where to get the best price on quality food, what stores have the best sales and coupons and take a look at how much you’re eating out. Look for ways to cut back in other areas of your spending so you can move that money to your groceries if that’s important to you.

After these past few weeks, you might have the desire to start preparing for Christmas early in 2022 so it doesn’t come out of nowhere and you find yourself scrambling. Set up a savings account specifically for Christmas or holiday spending. PFCU has Christmas club accounts that you can put money into all year long and then we send you that money later in the year to be used for all of your holiday spending!

It really doesn’t matter what your resolutions or goals are, it’s likely that your budget will have to be taken into account. It’s important that as you set these goals, you do so while looking at your budget and making changes as needed. And make sure to keep it up all year long! Take baby steps, don’t overwhelm yourself. When we get overwhelmed or stressed, it can be really easy to drop something altogether. So start small and stay steady! And don’t forget that budgets and your resolutions are flexible and can be adjusted throughout the year.

Happy New Year, everyone! And I hope 2022 brings joy for all of you!
