I’m moving out of my parent’s house, what do I do?

For many of us, moving into our own place is that first real taste of independence. As exciting as this next adventure is, it can also be stressful. Here are a few tips to make sure you land on your feet.

Establish a budget

  • If you don’t already have a budget, now is the perfect time to make one. There are many costs associated with living on your own, starting with the cost of moving. Consider things like transporting your belongings, buying furniture and paying a security deposit. You will also need to know your ongoing expenses from rent and groceries to insurance and utilities and everything in-between.

Need help with your budget? Find some great tips here.

Check your credit score and start saving

  • If you don’t know your credit score, now is the perfect time to check. Your credit score will play a major role in whether a landlord decides to rent to you. You can also get ahead by starting to build your credit before apartment hunting, Apply for a Credit Card. By making small purchases and paying it off every month your credit score will start to build!
  • Want to know more about credit and how to get your score?Check out our Money Talk Podcast and we will tell you everything you need to know!
  • Don’t forget to start saving for the security deposit before you start the process of making the big move. A great way to designate savings for your security deposit could be with a ‘you name it’ account at PFCU! More details here!

Know what you’re looking for

  • Make a list of all the things that you need in an apartment and match that to a place within your budget. Some things you might want to consider include location, number of bedrooms (will you have a roommate?), laundry access, whether pets are allowed, what utilities are included, storage space and parking.

Create a moving checklist

  • This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t forget anything important. Make a list of everything you need to take with you or what you will need to buy. You will be surprised how many things you use that you won’t already have when you’re on your own! Think about bedding, kitchen and bathroom essentials, laundry supplies, yard tools, storage and furniture. Other items to check off include changing your address, starting utilities, getting insurance and testing the smoke detectors.

If your move will take you far away from any of PFCU’s branch locations, you can still keep your account and manage your money through PFCU Online Banking and our Mobile App.
