All credit unions across the country, including state and national associations, are fighting to keep credit unions out of the upcoming Tax Reform Bill. Being included in this bill would reduce the profits credit unions make, which are reinvested into their membership through products, services, technology, and community giveback. These elements are the core of what credit unions stand for and why they were created. Credit Unions are truly "People Helping People," and it's crucial that we maintain our tax-exempt status. Even if this starts with larger credit unions, it opens the door for all of us to be included eventually. Please read below and take action to protect our credit unions.
The time for credit unions to advocate for the credit union tax exemption is upon us. If we delay, it may simply be too late.
Since the tax exemption was established by Congress in the 1930’s, we have not seen any bigger threat to the credit union tax exemption than RIGHT NOW. Congress is working on a massive, multi-trillion-dollar tax package; and they intend to finalize how they are going to cover the cost of the bill in the next week or two. Just about every line item in the federal tax code, including the federal credit union tax exemption, is being looked at as a potential “pay for.” We need your help and that of all credit union supporters and advocates across the state to make sure the credit union tax exemption is not included in the bill that’s introduced. If the elimination of the credit union tax exemption does make it into the introduced bill, it will be very – VERY – tough to remove it later in the legislative process. So – it’s extremely important that you act now.
We are asking all credit union members to simply take a minute to contact their federal elected officials and request that Congress protect our credit unions. This is very easy and very quick.
